JIS is proud of its two Elementary Schools, both serving students between
the ages of 5 and 12 from Kindergarten to Grade Five. Pondok Indah Elementary
(PIE) serves approximately 550 students and is located adjacent to the JIS
Middle and High Schools. Pattimura Elementary (PEL) sits on a historic campus
in Kebayaron Baru and serves approximately 400 students.
Structure
Grades and Classes
JIS Elementary Schools are organized by grade levels. Within each grade, students belong to classes taught by a caring and qualified homeroom teacher who is supported by a Host Country Teacher Aide. The homeroom teacher covers: language arts, mathematics, science, social studies utilizing the inquiry approach. Elementary students also attend specialized classes in the areas of Physical Education, Library, Art, Music, Technology, and Bahasa Indonesia.
Schedule
PIE and PEL operate on a six-day
cycle. These days are indicated on a calendar which is supplied to all parents
on a monthly basis. This enables parents to plan for each day.
Hours
Children in grades K-5 start
school at 7:30 AM and are dismissed at 2:00 PM. The students get two breaks a
day: they get a snack break in the morning and a lunch break in the afternoon.
After-School Activities run from
2:00 PM to 2:45 PM and are offered for children in Grades 1-5.

The Elementary Program builds each child to become a competent learner in a caring community — a thinker, creator, inquirer, feeler, problem solver and doer.
Like JIS as a whole, the Elementary School curriculum adopts programs which demonstrate the best international standards, practices and results for student learning. We place strong emphasis on language arts and mathematics. To ensure a balanced curriculum, we provide programs in science and technology, social studies, modern language, fine arts and physical development. Below are our approaches to Literacy and Mathematics. See Elementary Curriculum Highlights for more details.
Literacy
The school currently draws its K-12 standards for English Language Arts from the Ontario, Canada curriculum. Students begin to master the strands of oral communication, reading, writing and speaking in Elementary School. Using the workshop model and literature circles, children become competent and independent readers and are able to discuss and reflect on their reading as they undergo the ten stages of reading development.
Mathematics
The elementary mathematics curriculum is based on the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM) standards from the United States. Students are exposed to math daily through the Everyday Math program. Although primarily a US based program, children learn both Imperial and Metric measurements. This program is increasingly being adopted in leading international schools around the world. This assists students with transitions to a variety of schools beyond JIS. Everyday Math emphasizes six conceptual strands:
- Numbers and Numeration
- Operations and Computation
- Data and Chance
- Measurement and Reference Frames
- Geometry
- Patterns, Functions and Algebra
At a young age our positive, self-directed students learn to draw from gifted teachers, mentors, counselors and other resources to enhance their education. Here are some of the resources Elementary students and parents value most.
Faculty
Faculty are the most influential learning resource for students at the ES. They are a highly qualified and multicultural team, carefully selected for their ability to make a positive impact on student lives and learning.

Counseling
Each elementary campus has on-site counseling to assist students, parents and teachers in support of the social and emotional needs of our young learners. Elementary Schools offer the services of a qualified School Psychologist for student assessment, support and intervention as well.
English as an Additional Language
JIS offers English as an Additional Language (EAL) support for English language learners in Grades 1-5. The goal is to help each learner acquire English language proficiency in order to become successful in all areas of the curriculum. Admission to the EAL program is based upon fulfillment of JIS admissions requirements.
Learning Support
Students with mild learning needs will find a caring, individualized approach and support structure that helps them access the JIS Curriculum. Services available to students include Learning Support, Speech and Language Therapy and Intervention. Learning Support is a broadly based program, offering support to regular classroom teachers, parents and students. All students are registered in regular classes and must function with a minimum of special assistance.
JIS does not have the facilities to serve children who have serious learning, emotional or physical disabilities. If your child is receiving special services, such as learning resource instruction, remedial teaching, speech/language therapy or seeing any educational specialist outside the regular classroom, please contact the school and discuss your child's situation.
Inspired by our care for the whole child, JIS Elementary Schools offer a
variety of activities that appeal to a child’s sense of adventure, fun,
competition, learning and exploration.
Children can explore interests and sharpen skills through:
- Elementary choirs
- Musical activities and plays
- Sports
- Dance
- Art
- Swimming instruction
- Strings
- Service Learning
- and more!
Offerings in our After School Activity (ASA)
Program and JIS Academy Program vary from year to year, depending on student
interest and the availability of instructors. JIS Academy runs both
after-school, year-round and holiday programs.
Parent and community sponsored activities offer
afternoon and weekend variety for young children. Scouts, Brownies, gymnastics, soccer, baseball, basketball,
T-ball, softball and the AquaDragons competitive swim team are a few of the
recent activities engaging our young people at JIS.
Special Events
Throughout the year children are
given the opportunity to engage in special events that are integral to our
program. These include:
- Indonesia Week
- UN Day
- Earth Day
- Sports Day
- Talent Show
- Book Week
- Science Night
- Bingo Night

- Other cultural experiences.
Many of these events are
supported and run in collaboration with the Parent-Teacher Association

campus several times a year to go on learning journeys that support the
academic program.
